Kenya is the birth place of the safari and home to the most cosmopolitan city in East Africa. It is this duality that makes it a perfect playground for nomadic souls like us. Our safari (“journey” in Swahili) will begin by exploring Nairobi’s bustling city life including its markets, roof-top lounges, art collectives and popular sites including:

  • Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
Best known for their work to protect elephants, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.

  • Giraffe Center
A Kenyan non-profit organization dedicated to educating and providing opportunities to come into close contact with the world’s tallest species, the giraffe.

  • Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens
The film, 'Out of Africa' is based on Karen's autobiography with the same title. Today the property is a museum that the Kenyan government opened in 1986.

  • Kazuri Beads
This collective provides and sustains employment opportunities for disadvantaged members of Kenyan society, especially Single Motherhood women and in order to achieve this, we must produce top quality Ceramic Jewelry and Pottery.

Then, we are off to enjoy rural Kenya’s open plains, mountains, vast fresh-water lakes and superb stretches of coastline, as well as some of the best game parks in Africa.

After breakfast we will drive north via Nanyuki and Mt Kenya to the Samburu National Reserve. Rugged and remote, this wildlife reserve provides some the best and most colorful game viewing in the country. We’ll enjoy a lunch break in route, and an afternoon game drive.  The Samburu National Reserve is arid, rugged, but savagely beautiful. With less than 300 mm of rain a year, the wildlife depends for its very existence on the river fed from the rich forests of the Aberdare Mountains, 300km away. Several species of wildlife found in Samburu, are not found in other Kenyan parks. Among the most striking of these are the reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra. Lion, cheetah and leopard are all found here and elephant are plentiful. For the most part the reserve is hot by day but cool at night.

Day 4: Samburu National Reserve (B,L,D)
All day spent in the Samburu National Reserve with morning and afternoon game drive.  You will also have a village visit and evening sundowner.

Day 5: Mount Kenya (B, L,D)
Accommodation:
Serena Mountain Lodge
Breakfast at the lodge. You may wish to do an optional morning camel ride.  Morning drive deep into the forests of Mount Kenya for lunch at Serena Mountain Lodge. The Lodge is about 193 kilometers from Nairobi. Located at 2,134 meters above sea level, on the lower slopes of the mountain. The Lodge is cool, tranquil and hushed for optimum game-sightings. Raised on stilts above the forest canopy, a timbered drawbridge leads from the forest and up on to the wooden ‘decks' of the lodge. Inside, the impression of having boarded a ship is perpetuated by a combination of log paneled walls, timbered game-viewing decks and winding stairs leading to a selection of snugly comfortable, 41 cabin-styled rooms. Safe in the comfort of the lodge, we can observe the animals gathering to drink at the floodlit waterhole until well into the night.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park (B,L,D)
Accommodation:
Sarova Lion Hill Lodge
Lake Nakuru offers one of the world's most spectacular wildlife sights, that of brilliant pink flamingos as far as the eye can see. After breakfast we will descend the lush highlands into the Rift Valley with its stunning volcanic landscapes.  Transfer to Lake Nakuru with a stop in route at the Equator.  Game drive and picnic lunch at Lake Nakuru. When conditions are right, between one and two million lesser and greater flamingos feed around the shores of the shallow soda lake, together with tens of thousands of other birds. The best place to view the birds is from Baboon Cliff, where you can look out over the dazzling fringe of pink around the lake's shores. Lake Nakuru was declared a national park in 1961 and it now covers an area of some 200 km². Here you will also see warthog, waterbuck and large numbers of impala. Other slightly shyer residents include buffalo, Rothschild giraffe, eland, lion, leopard and black rhino. It goes without saying that this is a bird watchers paradise.

Day 7: Masai Mara (B,L,D)
Accommodation:
Mara Serena Lodge
Breakfast at the Camp.  Drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve offering wonderful scenery and plenty of game. It is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where the visitor may see animals in the same super-abundance as existed a century ago. Set in the heart of Africa’s Great Plains, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 square kilometers of wilderness. It is home to the highest concentration of animals and birds anywhere on the continent. Throughout the year the Mara is a place of natural drama, a kaleidoscope of color and life. The famed “Big Five” – Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard – roam the reserve, together with hundreds of others from the fastest animal on earth, the Cheetah, to one of the most secretive, the Bat-eared Fox. After the rains, when the first flush of grass turns the Mara’s golden savannah green, the mesmerizing wildlife spectacle anywhere takes place here: the Great Migration. This is the time when 1.5 million Wildebeest, accompanied by vast numbers of Zebra and Gazelles make the long and dangerous trek from drier lands in Tanzania, northwards to this corner of Kenya. For most of the century the Mara has drawn those searching for adventure and the thrill is still the same today with days spent face to face with nature at its most untouched and enthralling. We’ll enjoy lunch at the lodge and an afternoon game drive.

Day 8: Masai Mara (B,L,D)
Today is a great day for an optional Hot air balloon trip.  Early morning game drive and breakfast will be served at the Hippo Pool.  Lunch and afternoon game drive.  Masai dinner and overnight at the lodge.
